Chicken Meatball Shawarma
Serves 5-6
This recipe is a quick and simple way to bring home the flavors of chicken shawarma that packs a punch of flavor. You can cook the meatballs on the stove if you want more of a crust, but I like the ease and quick clean-up of oven roasting. I made my meatballs gluten-free but you can add flour if you would like. The meat is a little more sticky without the flour but manageable. Feel free to substitute almond flour as well. Enjoy!
Pair with...
Meatball Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground chicken
- 1 egg
- 1 cup flour (optional)
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp sumac
- 2 tbsp fresh mint, chopped
Tzatziki Sauce Ingredients
- 1 cup greek yogurt
- 2 tbsp fresh mint, chopped
- 1 large garlic clove, minced
- 1/2 cup cucumber, diced
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sumac
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Juice from 1/2 lemon
Preparation
Preheat oven to 400-degrees.
Mix the chicken with the rest of the ingredients and place your bowl in the freezer for 10 min. This will make handling the mix easier when forming the balls.
Line a sheet tray with foil and spray with cooking oil (or rub it with oil).
Using a 1-inch ice cream scoop, form the balls and line them up on the tray. If you don’t have a scoop just use your hands to form them. I find oiling my hands makes the job easier.
Place in the oven and cook for 25 min or until a minimum 165 degrees measured by a thermometer.
While the meat is cooking, mix all of the ingredients for the tzatziki sauce and set aside.
You may want to serve this dish with a simple romaine salad and turmeric rice. Some grilled naan bread is always a welcome addition!
